Buyers of Gas Equipment Be Aware

risk_1Every week we are asked to certify Type A gas appliances that have been purchased second hand through auctions or privately.

In many cases the equipment is uneconomical to certifier, as the gas appliance doesn't meet code?

What does that mean? The gas appliance must comply to a specific Australian Standard to meet safety and correct design.

It is an offense to sell, connect, install an appliance unless it is Gas certified.

  • Schedule 733 of the GAS Act

The gas certification check, is basically a safety check, to ensure all the Australian Standards are met, and the appliance works safely as per design.

Before you buy the appliance  Check!

  • The appliance works.
  • The appliance is approved or what will it cost to approve?
  • The appliance has the correct safeties and correctly designed to operate correctly.
  • The appearance of the appliance- does the appliance look correct, are there broken bits.
  • If in doubt don't buy it.
  • Get a specialist to check the appliance.
  • Call the QGA to get advise 1300 792 239
  • Look for a QGA badges , AGA or SAI water mark or look at the compliance plate for a certification number

It is too late to buy the gas appliance , before investigating the above questions.

If the appliance is not approved, a good gas fitter / knowledgable gas fitter will not connect the appliance , until the appliance is certified.
