Type A Gas Appliances

In Queensland and most states of Australia,  It is law that a Type A gas appliance be approved .

Safety Certified or Type tested before the appliance is sold, supplied or installed .

What is a Type A gas appliance?

A gas appliance where there is a testing scheme in place to approve the appliance and safety approved, generally it is a Gas appliance that is mass produced or individually made, where there is an Australian Standard and test procedure. The appliance is fully assembled and only requires connection to services. The appliance gas pressures do not exceed 7 kPa.

Examples of Type A gas appliances Gas Ovens, Gas Fryers,  Gas Pizza Ovens, Gas Grills, Gas Hot water systems, Gas cookers, Gas WOKS under 7 kPa .

If the above doesn't match the Type of appliance , then the appliance could be a Type B Gas appliance which is a gas appliance over 7 Kpa and or an industrial , commercial or doestic appliance that required assembly and usual has complex burners and control systems.

Examples Type B appliances - Gas spray booth ovens, package burner ovens, Gas Smoke ovens, High gas pressure prawn cookers

What is the process to have a Type A gas appliance certified? Before the unit maybe sold or connected to the gas supply the appliance needs to be checked and certified, an Individual Certification scheme applies in Queensland , where the QGA Certifier Certifies the equipment - See the Gas Certification section for more information.

Should you require more than 10-15 items to be certified , it would be more economical to have the units Type tested, where the units are checked through a lab and a full test is completed. This process costs around $15,000- $50,000 per item model range0 There are several choices of certification bodies that may complete.

The Australian Gas Association and SAI Global to name two.  Bizmatrix assists , several companies to complete this process between the manufacturer and the Certification body.
